Calm....Materials

Along with my chair being elegant and based around movement, im going to add a calm emotion to it, mainly by using calming materials, natural materials do this very well. here are a few images which i associate with calm.

Here are a few materials which are natural and add to the calming feeling that the user will recieve from the chair when sitting on it. The grain in the wood is quite elegant too as it has very nice formation of curves within the wood.

The main body could also be made from perspex, by having it in solid white it would add the sense of a calming nature, untouched like the image of the untouched scenery above. i also like the idea of it being clear perspex, that way it would show off the steel frame work which would normally be hidden tby the wood or white perspex. The steel which would be used for the frame work can be seen below aswel.

Development work

Again working from my elegant movement images, ive come up with some flowing forms for a chair.

With this design the curvy body would be made from flexible wood and the legs out of a nice steel, there would be suppotting rods running between the legs to add stabillity.

This design is using one continuos flowing piece of material, possibly perspex as the main body of the seat, with the legs being a nice metal again with supporting rods running through the body of the chair. whilst designing this i looked into different ways in which the legs could connect to the seat. I liked the idea that the legs could run through the seat and be visible on top of the chair, adding a nice elegant feature to the chair especially if the materials used are wood for the seat and steel for the legs, a nice contrast of traditional, natural wood and the elegant shiny steel.

The next few designs i was thinking why does the chair have to have three legs, especially if the design has a flowing body which already hits the floor.

More development sketch work

These ideas have come from my initial skecth of the chair which is taken from the elegant shape of a wedding dress, elegant and very simple, the curves are taken from the original shapes which i discovered whilst looking at the movement photography of the dancers.

The base of the chair is similar to the base/train of the wedding dress, then the curve which creates the seat is taken from a few images of movement photography.

Here are few developements of the chair making it more comfortable and adding different features to it.

This idea is to emphasise the steel rods which run through the chair to give it some stability, by adding a gap and creating a head rest, it shows off the rods which is a nice little feature to the chair.

This idea is that the back rest has strips of padding all the way down it, the bigger areas being where most of the back of the user will make contact with the chair. these areas will be a cushin kind of material adding some comfort to the chair, making this chair very elegant and comfortable to sit on.

Development sketch work

Here i have taken an idea from my sketch work and developed it slightly by adding more details to my sketches.

through the development, i played around with the back of the chair by it possibly having a steel rod running through the whole chair, and the back rest being in segments, a little repetition thrown in there to add to the elegance of the chair.

The chair would be made from a resin which would be rounded in form, making it very elegant along with its sweeping, flowing shape. The resin could be clear making the steel rods visable, adding a nice feature to the chair, but i think an elegant colour would be much more effective here, possibly a white, with the rod in between the base and back rest being a nice steel.

This would be an option if the chair was a slightly different design, if instead of it being a soild base to the chair if could be two similar forms to the exsisting idea, but they act as legs, these would be a nice elegant white material, and the seat would either be the same material or a clear resin, which will show off the elegant features of the legs.

Sketch work....Elegant

Here i have experimented with a few forms which are quite elegant as they are flowing forms and are one flow, possibly also only one peice of material aswell.
Below is some development of these elegant flowing chair designs.
